About us

The short story

Nathan & Small is a two-man garden irrigation business run by Zak Nathan and Oliver Small, working across London and the surrounding counties.

We do one thing and we do it properly: automatic watering systems for domestic gardens. No sales team, no subcontractors - the two people who survey your garden are the two people who install the system.

That means you always know who's coming, the design is done by the person laying the pipe, and when you ring the number on the card, one of us picks up.

What we install

Garden irrigation services

Every garden is different, so every system is designed from scratch after we've seen the space and measured your water pressure.

Drip irrigation

Low-pressure pipework threaded through beds, borders and pots. Water goes to the roots where it's needed, not into the air or onto the path.

Pop-up sprinklers

Sprinkler heads that sit flush with the lawn and rise only when running - plus micro-jet spray stakes for rockeries, raised beds and awkward corners.

Controllers & timers

Smart app-based controllers that adjust to the weather, or a simple automatic timer you set once and forget. We fit whichever suits how you like to run things.

Survey & design - free

We visit, walk the garden, measure the water pressure at the house and work out what's achievable. Then we follow up with a written quote.

Installation in a day

Pipework goes in below the surface with minimal disruption. We arrive in the morning and leave with the system running and set up, same day.

Servicing & repairs

Systems benefit from a check-over each season. We can flush the lines, go over every head and joint, adjust the coverage as planting grows in and sort out anything that's stopped working. Quoted separately as and when you want it.

What we do

From first survey to a finished system

It's a trade of its own

An irrigation system looks simple once it's finished, but designing one pulls in a lot at once: mains water pressure and flow rate, low-voltage wiring, spray patterns and overlap, evaporation, slope, and the very different thirst of a lawn versus a shrub border versus a row of pots.

Get the zoning wrong and half the garden is soaked while the rest stays dry. It's worth having someone who fits these week in, week out.

Looking after it afterwards

A watering system isn't something to fit and forget entirely. Heads get knocked by mowers, planting grows and blocks a spray arc, grit works its way into a nozzle and splits the stream.

We show you how everything works at handover so you can manage the day to day yourself. When something needs attention beyond that, you ring us directly and we'll come and sort it, and we can give the whole system a proper going over whenever you'd like one.

How it works

The installation process

Four straightforward stages from first call to a garden that waters itself.

1
Step one

Free site survey

We come out, walk the garden with you and measure the water pressure at the house - that number decides what's possible. We'll talk through where you want coverage and what you'd like to control it with.

2
Step two

Design & written quote

We design the zones and head layout around your garden and follow up with a clear written quote.

3
Step three

Installation - one day

We arrive in the morning and the system goes in that day. Pipework is worked in below the surface and the lawn is left tidy behind us.

4
Step four

Set up & handover

We programme the controller, run every zone with you watching, adjust the arcs, and show you how to change the schedule if you ever want to.

Why us

Why choose Nathan & Small

The owners do the work

Two of us, no crews and no subcontractors. The people who quote your job are the people who install it.

Installed in a single day

Most gardens are surveyed, dug, plumbed, wired and running inside one visit. No week of trenches.

Designed for your garden

Zones and heads worked out around your planting and your water pressure - not a kit pulled off a shelf.

Water used properly

Drip lines and correctly zoned sprinklers put water at the roots, early in the morning, instead of evaporating off a lawn at midday.

Smart or simple

Weather-aware app control if you want it, a plain automatic timer if you don't. We won't push tech you'll never open.

We stay reachable

You deal with us directly rather than a call centre. If something needs adjusting or repairing down the line, ring the same number.

FAQs

Common questions

How much does a garden irrigation system cost?
It depends on the size of the garden, how many zones are needed and whether you want beds, lawn or both covered. That's why the survey is free - we'd rather measure your pressure and give you a real number than quote a range that turns out to be wrong.
Will you dig up my lawn?
Often we don't need to. In a lot of gardens the pipework can be tucked out of sight without breaking ground at all, run under bark, through borders, behind planting or along existing edges. Digging is only necessary in some cases, usually where a line has to cross an open lawn. Where we do need to lift turf we keep it to a narrow slit, put it straight back and tidy up behind us, and within a couple of weeks of growth you won't see where we've been.
Do I need a smart controller?
No. Smart controllers adjust watering using local weather data and are handy if you like managing things from your phone. A simple automatic timer does the job perfectly well if you'd rather set it once and leave it. We fit either.
Can you water pots and hanging baskets?
Yes - pots, troughs, raised beds and baskets are all straightforward to put on a drip line. They're often the first thing to suffer when you go away, so they're well worth including.
What happens in winter?
We'll talk you through what to do at the end of the season when we hand the system over, so you can take care of it yourself. If you'd rather we did it for you, just ask and we'll quote for it.
Do you service systems you didn't install?
Yes. If you've inherited a system with a house or had one fitted years ago, we're happy to come and look at it, service it or extend it.
Which days do you work?
Any day of the week. Give us a ring or send an enquiry and we'll find a time that suits.
